WisdomTree CEO believes regulatory clarity under Trump will make Bitcoin ‘mainstream’

WisdomTree CEO Jonathan Steinberg is confident that Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are nearing mainstream adoption, predicting this milestone within the next few years. He shared his insights during a CNBC interview on July 29, highlighting several key factors driving this trend.

Regulatory Clarity and Publicly Traded Crypto Funds

Steinberg underscored the importance of regulatory clarity, the emergence of publicly traded crypto funds, and the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs) as primary catalysts for widespread adoption. He emphasized the significance of former President Donald J. Trump’s speech at the Bitcoin 2024 conference on July 27, predicting its long-term impact on the industry.

According to Steinberg, Trump’s commitment to providing regulatory clarity for crypto and digital assets represents a pivotal moment for the industry. He believes that well-defined regulatory frameworks will positively influence both crypto as an asset class and blockchain-enabled finance overall. Steinberg remarked, “[Trump] could not have spoken in a more ambitious tone for what he would do with crypto and Bitcoin as an asset class.”

Bitcoin’s Performance and Future Prospects

Steinberg pointed out that Bitcoin has been the best-performing asset class for the past 15 years and is expected to continue outperforming the market, driving further adoption as it gains regulatory acceptance. He likened Bitcoin’s evolution to the transition from landlines to smartphones, predicting that digital assets will eventually dominate financial transactions. “In money, you had gold and then paper money — we’re moving toward programmable money, which will really transform financial services broadly,” he added.

Expansion Beyond Core Assets

The narrative around crypto is broadening to include a wider range of tokenized real-world assets. Steinberg explained that while crypto remains an asset class, there is a broader trend of tokenizing real-world assets, leading to a convergence of the two. He noted that traditional financial institutions are already entering the RWA market, citing examples such as BlackRock’s BUIDL and Franklin Templeton’s FOBXX. Additionally, Goldman Sachs plans to launch three new tokenization products for institutional clients later this year.

Future of Real-World Assets

According to McKinsey & Company, the market for RWAs is projected to reach $2 trillion by 2030. However, the firm also highlighted challenges in the sector, such as limited liquidity and transaction volume, which it referred to as a “cold start” problem.

Steinberg’s insights reflect a growing belief in the potential of cryptocurrencies and tokenized assets to transform financial services, driven by regulatory clarity and institutional interest. As these trends continue to develop, the financial landscape is likely to experience significant changes in the coming years.
