Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum Co-Founder, Contributes Generously
Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, has donated 10 million baht (approximately $292,000) to aid wildlife conservation at Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo. This generous contribution is part of the zoo’s wildlife sponsorship program.
The zoo announced via the social media platform X that Buterin has adopted Moo Deng, a pygmy hippo, with his donation supporting the care of her and her family.
“Thank you Vitalik Buterin @VitalikButerin for joining the Wildlife Sponsorship Program and adopting Moo Deng with a generous gift of 10,000,000 THB for her family! We look forward to working with you over the next 2 years for the benefit of the Khao Kheow Open Zoo community & all…”
Zoo Director Expresses Gratitude
Narongwit Chotchoy, the director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, expressed heartfelt appreciation for Buterin’s philanthropic effort, highlighting its significance for environmental and educational initiatives.
In a letter accompanying the donation, Buterin emphasized his commitment to global causes.
Visit During Devcon 7 Strengthens Ties with Thailand
Vitalik Buterin visited the zoo during Devcon 7, Ethereum’s flagship conference, held in Bangkok in November. This visit signaled a growing connection between the Ethereum community and Thailand.
Support for Education and Habitat Development
The donated funds will not only provide a habitat for Moo Deng and other pygmy hippos but also help establish an educational center at the zoo. The center will focus on educating visitors about pygmy hippos and debunking misconceptions.
Unlike their larger relatives, pygmy hippos are smaller, more passive, and primarily nocturnal. They often shy away from human interaction, a trait that the zoo aims to emphasize through its educational programs.
Buterin’s Broader Philanthropic Efforts
Earlier this year, Buterin converted $1.6 million worth of meme coins into Ethereum (ETH) and donated the proceeds to various charitable causes.
His ongoing contributions to Ethereum and his philanthropic endeavors have led notable economists, including Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, to consider him a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
By combining technology with philanthropy, Buterin continues to inspire communities worldwide
