Using Blockchains Shouldn’t Be Painful

In a recent interview with Matt Zahab on the Cryptonews Podcast, zkLink CEO Vince Yang elaborated on the challenges users face with blockchains and proposed solutions to alleviate these issues. Yang emphasized the critical role of Layer 3s (L3s) in enhancing blockchain usability by addressing scalability, liquidity fragmentation, user experience, and interoperability.

Yang noted that the rapid proliferation of new chains and roll-ups requires users to constantly adapt, which he described as “painful and difficult.” He suggested that abstracting and unifying these chains can significantly improve user experience.

The Need for the Third Layer

Explaining the importance of L3s, Yang highlighted the foundational role of Layer 1s (L1s) like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Layer 2s (L2s) are built on top of these to offload computation, improving scalability and user experience. However, L2s face bandwidth limitations, leading to competition among applications.

Yang explained that L3s, operating on top of L2s, offer dedicated resources for specific applications without sharing bandwidth. This customization enhances scalability, speed, privacy, and regulatory compliance.

The Present and Future of L3s: L2s Must Succeed for L3s to Rise

Yang acknowledged that the development of L3s is still in its early stages, emphasizing that their success is contingent on the maturation of L2s. As L2s like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base become more production-ready, they pave the way for L3s.

Yang mentioned that while general-purpose chains face developer scarcity, a hybrid approach of building micro-chains could bridge the gap between application-specific and general-purpose chains.

Plenty More in the Pipeline

zkLink has made significant strides with the launch of zkLink Nova, achieving over $1 billion in total value locked (TVL) and hosting more than 800,000 unique wallets and 50 live applications. The platform aims to unify liquidity across Ethereum L2s and L1.

Yang revealed plans for a token launch and the zkLink Nova AirDrop, which are crucial for ecosystem growth. He also hinted at upcoming key partnerships to further expand zkLink’s ecosystem.

About Vince Yang

Vince Yang, the CEO of zkLink, leads a team developing zero-knowledge blockchain solutions for the Ethereum ecosystem. Their primary product, the zero-knowledge Aggregated Layer 3 zkEVM Rollup network, zkLink Nova, aims to bridge various Layer 2 rollup ecosystems, addressing liquidity fragmentation and enhancing scalability and security. Yang, a Bitcoin enthusiast and former engineer, has transitioned from Bitcoin mining to pioneering ZK Proofs.

That’s not all.

In the interview, Yang also discussed:

  • The basics and benefits of ZK proofs
  • Verification without sharing personal information
  • ZK machine learning as a key trend
  • Comparisons between L3s, L2s, and L1s
  • Advantages of zkLink Nova and unified chains
  • The cost considerations of L3s
