The recent arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France has drawn significant attention across the cryptocurrency industry. Notable figures, including Tron founder Justin Sun, have expressed their support and proposed innovative ways to assist Durov.
Justin Sun Proposes ‘FreePavel DAO’ for Legal Defense
Justin Sun has suggested the creation of a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) called ‘FreePavel DAO’ to support Durov’s legal defense. This initiative is designed to showcase the cryptocurrency industry’s solidarity by leveraging blockchain technology and crowdfunding principles.
“We should demonstrate the unity of the cryptocurrency industry by organizing a FreePavel DAO to help Telegram founder Pavel Durov legally gain his freedom,” Sun stated. He also committed to donating $1 million if the DAO is established with sufficient community backing and decentralized governance.
Telegram Responds to Durov’s Arrest
Telegram’s response to Durov’s detention emphasized compliance with EU laws, including the Digital Services Act. The company assured that its moderation practices meet industry standards and continue to improve. Telegram also highlighted that Durov frequently travels in Europe and has “nothing to hide.”
“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform. We’re awaiting a prompt resolution of this situation,” Telegram posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Industry Leaders Rally for Support
In addition to Justin Sun, other industry leaders have voiced concerns over Durov’s arrest. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warned that the situation could set a dangerous precedent, potentially threatening user privacy and communication freedom in Europe. He criticized the nature of the charges, which seem to be related to “unmoderated” content and not complying with demands for user data.
“This looks very bad and worrying for the future of software and comms freedom in Europe,” Buterin commented.
The Road Ahead for FreePavel DAO
As the cryptocurrency community rallies around Durov, the proposed FreePavel DAO could become a pivotal moment in the industry’s history. Justin Sun’s pledge to donate $1 million underscores the potential power of decentralized efforts in addressing legal challenges and advocating for broader issues like privacy and freedom of communication.
