Prediction platforms like Polymarket offer much more than just betting opportunities on elections. They hold significant potential for improving various sectors such as social media, science, news, and governance, as outlined by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in his blog. Buterin refers to this concept as “info finance.”
Defining Info Finance
According to Buterin, info finance is a method involving two steps: (i) identifying a specific fact you want to know, and (ii) designing a market to extract that information effectively from participants.
Polymarket’s Role in Election Forecasts
Buterin highlighted Polymarket’s recent success in providing accurate predictions for the U.S. elections, where the platform indicated a 60/40 probability of Trump winning. At certain points, Polymarket also reflected a greater than 95% likelihood for Trump’s victory and over 90% probability of his party gaining full governmental control, even when some news outlets suggested otherwise.
Dual Function of Platforms like Polymarket
Platforms like Polymarket serve dual purposes: they act as betting sites for users while also offering a way to access real-time data trends. Buterin mentions that he relies on Polymarket’s charts as part of his “information-gathering workflow,” which has allowed him to stay informed efficiently.
Future of Info Finance and AI Integration
Buterin believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will significantly enhance the impact of info finance in the next decade by participating in prediction markets, further increasing their efficacy.
Applications for DAOs
Info finance can be highly beneficial for decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). According to Buterin, many DAOs face issues with excessive decision-making tasks, leading to delegation and the risks of centralization. He proposes that DAOs could utilize prediction markets—enabling both humans and AI to participate—to predict the outcomes of minor decisions, reserving votes by DAO members for critical matters.
Solving Trust Issues with Info Finance
Info finance, according to Buterin, can address “trust problems” within decentralized governance structures. With reduced gas fees on blockchain networks, the implementation of info finance can become more viable, opening up new solutions for governance challenges
