Details of the Hack
Polygon experienced a security breach today when hackers took control of its community Discord channel for about three hours. During this time, scammers infiltrated the channel and targeted users. The situation has since been resolved.
Mudit Gupta, Polygon’s Chief Information Security Officer, confirmed that the team has restored full control of the Discord server and is in the process of undoing the changes made by the hackers.
Initial Signs of the Breach
The breach was first detected when several Polygon users observed unusual activity on the Discord channel. Scammers, posing as legitimate support agents, began flooding the support channel with malicious links and deceptive messages.
One community member alerted others to the issue via social media platform X, emphasizing scam links in the announcements channel. The user commented:
“I noticed many people seeking help in support, with scammers misleading them under the guise of assistance.”
Due to this alert, the user was temporarily banned by the channel moderators.
Impact on Users
In a more critical instance, another user known as “ValidatorK” reported losing $150,000 worth of Ether (ETH) after interacting with what seemed to be an official announcement.
This attack raised concerns about Polygon’s security measures, even though Gupta assured that all privileged accounts on the server were protected with two-factor authentication (2FA).
The breach’s timing was particularly troubling for Polygon as it occurred during the platform’s network upgrade. Polygon is set to replace its native token, MATIC, with the new POL token on September 4.
Rising Trend of Discord Hacks
Hacks targeting Discord channels have become increasingly common, especially within the crypto community. Since Discord is frequently used for sharing valuable information and managing assets, it has become an appealing target for cybercriminals.
The Polygon Discord breach is the latest in a series of similar attacks. On March 25, 2023, the Arbitrum Discord server was compromised, and hackers posted a phishing link on the official channel. Additionally, on May 5, Gnus.AI, an AI network, suffered a loss of approximately $1.27 million due to a similar Discord server breach.
