OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever launches AI firm focused on safety above all

Ilya Sutskever, the co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, has announced the launch of a new AI company focused on developing “safe superintelligence.” Joining him as co-founders are former OpenAI member Daniel Levy and former Apple AI lead Daniel Gross. The firm, named Safe Superintelligence Inc., was announced on June 19.

Safe Superintelligence Inc. aims to tackle the crucial technical challenge of our time: ensuring that advanced AI systems are safe for humans. The company will operate as a specialized lab dedicated solely to advancing safe superintelligence (SSI) technology. It plans to assemble a highly skilled team of engineers and researchers focused exclusively on SSI development.

The firm emphasizes prioritizing safety over other considerations such as management complexity, short-term commercial pressures, or product development cycles. It aims to rapidly advance capabilities while maintaining a singular focus on safety, ensuring scalability without distraction.

Safe Superintelligence Inc. disclosed that investors support its safety-first approach, although specific financial details were not revealed during a recent Bloomberg interview with Sutskever and Gross. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, with additional offices in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The launch of Safe Superintelligence Inc. follows a period of internal discord at OpenAI, during which concerns about AI safety surfaced. Sutskever, involved in efforts to replace OpenAI’s CEO in late 2023, recently departed from the organization. His departure, along with other related developments, has highlighted ongoing concerns about AI safety within the industry.

Despite leaving OpenAI, Sutskever maintains a positive relationship with the organization and has indicated that they are aware of his new venture.
