Global Trends in Law Enforcement Requests
Coinbase revealed in its latest transparency report that it received 10,707 requests from law enforcement and government agencies worldwide over the past year. This marks an 18% decrease compared to the previous reporting period.
For the third consecutive year, the United States accounted for the largest number of requests, despite a decline this year.
Significant Regional Variations
Outside the U.S., Coinbase reported notable decreases in law enforcement requests from several major markets. Germany saw a 33% decline, while the UK and Spain experienced decreases of 45% and 35%, respectively.
Conversely, Singapore witnessed a striking 221% increase in requests, rising from 34 in 2023 to 109 this year. This surge highlights the region’s growing regulatory activity as it emerges as a prominent hub for cryptocurrency.
Criminal Enforcement as a Primary Driver
The report revealed that 81% of all law enforcement requests originated from six key jurisdictions: the U.S., the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Australia. These requests primarily focused on criminal enforcement, involving investigations into illicit financial activities, fraud, and other criminal matters.
The legal processes included subpoenas, court orders, search warrants, and other official mechanisms. Coinbase emphasized its commitment to responding only to requests deemed legally valid.
Ensuring Compliance While Protecting User Rights
Coinbase underscored its robust review process designed to ensure compliance without compromising customer rights. Each request undergoes thorough scrutiny by a dedicated team of lawyers, analysts, and privacy experts.
The company noted that its approach includes narrowing overly broad or vague requests, rejecting legally insufficient ones, and, when possible, providing anonymized or aggregated data rather than individualized customer details.
Balancing Transparency and Customer Trust
While Coinbase shares certain customer details—such as names, IP addresses, and payment information—in response to valid requests, it clarified that no government has direct access to its systems.
