Binance CEO slams Nigeria for inhumane treatment of detained executive

Binance CEO Richard Teng has condemned the Nigerian government for its harsh treatment of Tigran Gambaryan, an American executive detained since February. Gambaryan, who works with Binance, has faced severe conditions during his detention.

Concerns Over Health and Inhumane Treatment

On September 3, Teng took to X to share a widely circulated video of Gambaryan struggling to walk into a courtroom. Teng expressed his concern, stating, “This inhumane treatment of Tigran must end. He must be allowed to go home for medical treatment and to be with his family.”

Viral Video Highlights Alarming Conditions

The video, recorded on September 2 in Abuja, shows Gambaryan limping into the courtroom despite his request for a wheelchair. Prison authorities denied his request, leaving him to drag his left leg. Furthermore, when Gambaryan attempted to lean on a correctional officer for support, the officer refused to assist him. Consequently, Gambaryan had to rely on a single crutch. In response, Gambaryan expressed his frustration, stating, “[The prison guard] was told not to help me. He said there’s instruction – this is fcked up. Why couldn’t I use a goddamn wheelchair? This is a show. I’m a fcking innocent person. Why are you doing this to me?”

Observers have noted that the video reflects the concerns of Gambaryan’s family about his deteriorating health while in Nigerian custody. On September 2, Gambaryan’s legal team filed a new bail application based on his medical condition. They argued for his release to receive treatment for various ailments developed in prison, including malaria, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and a herniated disc causing severe pain and limited mobility.

Despite these concerns, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) opposed the bail request, arguing that Gambaryan’s health was not critical. In response, the judge ordered that Gambaryan be provided with a wheelchair. The case will continue on September 4
