Argentina’s Vice President Says She Talked to Bukele About BTC

Argentina’s Vice President, Victoria Villarruel, recently shared details of her discussions with El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, during his visit to Buenos Aires. The two leaders met twice during Bukele’s trip, which also included a meeting with Bitcoin-enthusiast President Javier Milei.

El Salvador’s Role as a Bitcoin Pioneer

Following their private discussions, Villarruel spoke to the media, revealing that Bitcoin adoption was a key topic during her conversation with Bukele. She highlighted El Salvador’s pioneering efforts in Bitcoin implementation and how the country effectively attracts remittances from citizens living abroad. Villarruel described the dialogue as “very interesting, pleasant, and simple,” emphasizing the importance of ongoing collaboration between the two nations on related topics.

The summit organizers live-streamed footage of Villarruel and Bukele entering a meeting room, further underlining the significance of their exchange.

Discussions on Bitcoin and Volcano Bonds

During the summit, Villarruel expressed a strong interest in El Salvador’s Bitcoin policies. A clip shared on social media captured Villarruel telling Bukele, “I wanted to take this opportunity to discuss Bitcoin with you, as it’s a topic of great interest to me. I’m also keen to learn more about the Volcano Bonds project.”

This project refers to Bukele’s plan to launch Bitcoin bonds via the Bitfinex exchange, with the goal of funding the development of Bitcoin City, a settlement centered around Bitcoin innovation.

Interest in El Salvador’s Digital Asset Commission

Villarruel also expressed curiosity about El Salvador’s National Commission for Digital Assets (CNAD), an organization tasked with overseeing and promoting the country’s crypto ecosystem. Since President Milei’s inauguration in late 2023, Argentine and Salvadoran officials have engaged in multiple discussions about Bitcoin, including a key summit in March and a meeting between CNAD and Argentina’s National Securities Commission (CNV) in May.

These ongoing dialogues signal a growing relationship between the two countries in the realm of cryptocurrency and digital assets.
